Keep your promise, RHE

To the Editor:
The following is an open letter to members of the Rolling Hills Estates City Council.
Your community requested no further development of the Peninsula Center corridor between Crenshaw and Hawthorne boulevards. This was a strong request.
Your community also requested a moratorium on all the activity. The RHE City Council, fearing a lawsuit, refrained from initiating the moratorium. However, the City Council said that they would not approve any further construction until the impacts of the already approved 133 units, which include the 981 Silver Spur Road and 901 Deep Valley Drive developments already under construction, were evaluated.
It appears that the City Council has not made this clear to landowners and developers. There are many rumors about town regarding new condo developments, i.e., The Avenue of the Peninsula. Where is this “wait-and-see” approach?
We realize that the process of new construction takes much planning. However, has the city of RHE told these developers that they may not ever be able to build? Have the landowners and developers been told that the city must remain loyal to the communities it represents, and that the community feels strongly against development? A moratorium was not initiated for fear of a major lawsuit, but what are you setting yourselves up for now by teasing developers into thinking they can develop when no one wants more development? Where is this wait-and-see approach that was promised?
The community has already expressed its concerns regarding air and noise pollution, road congestion, overpopulation in a small, confined area and the potential for an increase in crime. Why in the world would you want to do this to the fine citizens of our community? If people chose to live in an urban area, they would live in Los Angeles, not on the Peninsula.
We urge the RHE City Council to protect the citizens of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and to keep their promise. These developers will most definitely alter our lifestyle and ruin the magic of living on the Peninsula.
